Martial arts – Bo staff katas
It is commonly believed that Okinawan farming tools evolved into lethal weapons of self-defense when the Satsuma samurai clan forbade the peasants from carrying arms. This course teaches the traditional self-defense techniques and katas for the “King” of the Okinawan weapons. It is an ideal teaching aid for review, rank testing, competition, and self defense. The bo staff is traditionally a six-foot long staff made from red or white oak. This tool was believed to be used as a carrying implement, where the bo staff, with baskets or sacks hanging from one or both ends, would lie across the bearers’ shoulders. Other origins of the bo staff as a weapon are believed to have been derived from walking sticks used by travelers (especially monks) or from the handle of a rake or shovel. Grandmaster Michael A. Stelzer holds several advanced ranks (10th Dan and above) in various styles of martial arts. Additionally, he holds three doctoral of science degrees and is a certified professional wrestler.
